Hi!
We're Rich and Rae Mitchell, owners of Lumbertown Farm. Thanks for
taking the time to stop by and get better acquainted.
We
have both had a love of horses for as long as we can remember. Our
experience with horses at Lumbertown began in the late 80's with
several "backyard" horses that we rode on the trails around
the farm. In the spring of 1990, we read an article about miniature
horses. We were all fascinated with these diminutive equines and
sought out a breeder not too far from our home.
We
made arrangements to visit their farm and while we were there, the
owner picked up a few day old foal and handed it to Rich. The foal
simply laid his head on Rich's shoulder and we were hooked. While not
all mini foals are this relaxed, they are by nature very
people-friendly. With heavy hearts, we found ourselves without any
miniature horses in 2005 with the passing of two of our originals. We
closed one chapter in our lives and moved on to others.
Our
introduction to Tennessee Walking Horses came quite by accident
while we were at a miniature horse show. During the same weekend, the
Walking Horse Association of Michigan (WHAM) was
holding their Little Celebration show in an arena on the same
fairground. We went over on Saturday evening to kill some time and
check out the horses. What we saw was truly awesome. These beautiful,
powerful and graceful animals exhibited both kindness and easy-going
personalities.Their "no bounce" gait intrigued us even at
this brief introduction.
In
the spring of 1994, we went to visit a nearby breeder. By the time
we left after the second visit, it was clear that Walking Horses were
going to be a big part of our lives.

We
are pictured here on a Michigan Trail Riders Shore-to-Shore ride in
1997. The smooth, ground-covering gait and generally easy-going
personalities of the Walkers make them naturals for long distance
trail riding, which we enjoy immensely along with horse camping in
the National Forests around our area.
We
currently own a Gold Champagne Walker/Racking stallion, a Classic
Champagne Tobiano Walking stallion, 9 Walker or Racking mares and 2
yearlings fillies, a weanling colt and have at least one foal coming.
As
the TWH slogan says:
